What is the Mother?

The mother of vinegar is a cellulose-containing film of bacteria and acetic acid. It is a natural byproduct of the fermentation process that turns alcohol into vinegar - or in our case - coconut sap into vinegar. The mother of vinegar is not harmful and can be safely consumed. In fact, some people believe that it has health benefits...

Dash here! Co-founder of Three Spirit and Head of Product. The mother of vinegar is a good source of probiotics, which are live bacteria that are beneficial for gut health. It is also a source of enzymes, which can help to break down food and improve digestion. The mother of vinegar can be added to food or drinks, or it can be used to make its own vinegar, hence we call it mother! Here are some of the potential benefits of the mother of vinegar:
  • Improves gut health
  • Boosts the immune system
  • Helps to detoxify the body
  • Reduces inflammation
  • Improves skin health
If you are looking for a natural way to improve your health, the mother of vinegar is a good option. It is a safe and effective way to get the benefits of probiotics, enzymes, and other nutrients.
The Mother is perhaps most common in apple cider vinegars and can be found in many brands that choose not to filter the final product allowing the semi solid pieces of ‘mother’ to remain in tact.

What's that in my bottle?

You will sometimes find The Mother in Social Elixir due to the fact that we use unfiltered organic coconut vinegar in the product. It brings a real ZING to the flavour profile and lots of aroma on the nose. We find that this sharp hit of vinegar cuts through the bittersweet stickiness of the liquid balancing it out nicely. Social Elixir is also full of high grade dry powdered plant extracts such as cacao, damiana and lion's mane mushroom. While these extracts are blended into solution when making Social Elixir, some sediment is completely normal. When the sediment and The Mother combine one can sometimes get a mix of the two. It does not always happen but in some cases you might find that the last pour from the bottle has a bit of this sediment / mother combo and is particularly punchy. Don’t be alarmed…it may not look amazing but this is actually all the good stuff at the bottom of the bottle! Always remember that giving your spirit bottle a good SHAKE before pouring as you make your way through it is a good rule of thumb.
